Strand 20
About the Nursery

At Strand on the Green Infant and Nursery School we give every Nursery child the best possible start to their journey through school. We know this is a fundamental time for learning new skills and facts, developing language and forming relationships; preparing our children to be ready for Reception and beyond.

Our passionate and highly experienced Nursery team have created a holistic curriculum based on the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum (click here) and Development Matters (click here).

We offer a play based and active pedagogy in the large, well equipped indoor environment as well as the outdoor areas which includes a Nursery nature garden, climbing wall and physical play space. Each day the children will experience child initiated learning where they make choices, follow their own interests and become curious and inquisitive learners. Children also enjoy daily (adult led) small group and whole class learning sessions.

Communication and language development are vital in Nursery and as part of this we promote a love of story, reading, talking, collaboration and singing. Cosy reading areas and inviting places to interact are provided inside and out.

We believe in memorable moments and we provide our Nursery children with cultural capital from an early age. This ranges from a frosty morning walk in the Forest (followed by hot chocolate) to incubating eggs and caring for our baby chicks. It involves listening to visiting musicians, meeting Father Christmas when he lands on the roof and handling farm animals on the field. Early opportunities to perform are provided through a Nursery Christmas performance and a Summer Dance event.

Nursery children feel very much part of the main school, wearing the same uniform and joining in whole school events and special Assemblies. From the beginning of their time in Nursery the children are immersed in the Strand ethos making the move to Reception an easy and natural progression. Specialist Forest School and PE staff teach Nursery children and will continue this throughout their time in school.

Parents are valued as the first educators of their children and we work closely with families to achieve the best start and outcomes for our pupils. Your child’s learning journey will be shared with you through a combination of informal chats and planned meetings as well as a paper journal and an online learning platform called 'Seesaw'.
