Physical Education

Capitalising on young children’s natural enthusiasm for movement and using it to explore and learn about their world, children in our Nursery and Reception classes have access to wonderful outdoor learning spaces where climbing, riding bikes, digging in mud, sand and water play supports gross and fine motor skill development.

Our lunchtime teachers are all trained to ensure we have an active playground where, dancing, nursery songs singing, skipping, scooting, gymnastics, athletics and ball games is all available.  Our playground is also marked in a way to encourage movement and there are large pieces of climbing equipment.

We are a Forest School which means that children work in our wooded area on skills such as learning to enjoy and appreciate nature whilst developing self-confidence and self-esteem through hands on learning and movement.

Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 children enjoy two hours of PE each week where the focus is on gaining competence in agility, balance and coordination whilst developing the important qualities of discipline, resilience, communication, team work and ambition.  Children are expected to wear full P.E. kit for their P.E. lessons.  Through dance, gymnastics, games and athletics (leading up to our amazing annual Sports Day, held on the sports ground at Chiswick High School) we are able to develop positive attitudes towards physical activity and to improve confidence which we have found leads to better concentration, attitude and academic achievement.  We have a PE Champion who teaches skills across the school and works closely with the PE lead.  Year 1 and Year 2 will enjoy support from a coach at Will to Win Tennis.  We additionally run a series of high quality lunchtime intervention activities for targeted children. We are proud to have gained the Bronze and Silver Healthy Schools Awards and are working on getting Gold. We cook regularly with all children from the nursery up (our after-school Cooking Clubs are always popular) and spend lots of time learning about how to be healthy and why it’s important.  Part of this ongoing program is a hand washing initiative so children can learn about the importance of hand hygiene.

Other initiatives to nurture healthy lifestyles include skipping workshops every year; a healthy breakfast for those who bike or scoot to school on Bike Breakfast Day; Scoot to School day with challenges and safety advice from scoot-skate professionals; our Daily Mile run around the playground (in all weathers).  Finally be sure to join us every Friday morning before school starts for our weekly Wake Up Shake Up exercise session.
