Religious Education

The aim of Religious Education at Strand is to help our children learn about and learn from religious and spiritual insights, beliefs and practices. Children develop knowledge and understanding of Christianity and other major world faiths including Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism and Sikhism as well as the tradition of Humanism. We help children develop a sense of their own identity and foster a respect and sensitivity to those following different faiths.

We take a creative approach to learning RE and it is often taught with strong cross curricular links to Literacy, Art and Music. Learning is inspired using major world faith festivals to support our teaching on worship and celebration eg Christmas, Diwali, Eid and Wesak. We look at all special places of worship.  Children learn about rites of passage, stories, writings, language and symbolism either in class, Assemblies or from visiting faith leaders or parent guests to class.

There is an Assembly every day and these are often based on themes such as citizenship, friendship and caring for the environment. Stories from different religions are used and children are given the opportunity to speak, think or reflect during assembly time. Important times of the year for different faiths or groups of people are marked, for example Remembrance Sunday, the Hindu/Sikh festival of Diwali, Hannukah, Eid and Christmas. We often invite different Faith Leaders and Community members to lead Assemblies with staff.  We use a candle to mark the end of our assemblies and children are offered the opportunity to say a short prayer whilst it is lit.

If any parent feels that they would prefer to exercise their right to withdraw their child from Religious Education or Collective Worship on religious grounds, the Headteacher is available to discuss this.
